Artist in Residency

This show of work that was developed over a summer at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary offers a glance at painting what is seen, adored, and unexpected at Hawk Mountain. This series of natural scenery showcases many of the area's known bird species, but it also exhibits how the two counties, Berks and Schuylkill, share the opportunity to look up and see glimpses of quiet life in a human civilization.

Artist Statement

Forgotten spaces often reference the people that used to inhabit them before an economic turn. My work shines a light on abandoned projects, unkempt industrial environments, parking lots, or overgrown backyards. Each of these places shares the honest story of our lives without being cleaned up, mowed over, or renovated to fit in to a cookie-cutter suburban yard. I empathize with each of these locations for their varying degrees of attention, because they speak to how powerful humility can be. Humility might not be the loudest way to grab attention, but my pursuit of painting is that these virtues that I hold so high can be admired to the same degree as the landscape itself.

Bio

artist

Abigail DeVizia is a visual artist from Milford, PA currently living in Rochester, NY. Abigail studied Fine Arts Painting under the expertise of her professors at Kutztown University, where she graduated from in May 2017. Abigail's works often study the forgotten landscape such as abandoned projects, unkempt industrial environments, parking lots, or overgrown backyards. She is motivated by a sense of empathy for these places and admires any place that holds humility in the highest regard. Each of these places shares the honest story of our lives without being cleaned up to fit in to a cookie-cutter suburban lifestyle. Abigail's work can be found in private collections and has been shown in public juried shows such as the GoggleWorks' Annual Juried Exhibition. She hopes to continue to grow in maturity, grace, and love as she takes on a new breath of life in Rochester while she follows her passions to paint and give back to those in need.
